When it comes to Gold tier Hospital Cover, not all policies are created equal. While Gold tier policies provide the maximum Hospital Cover – which means they cover ALL 38 clinical categories health insurers are allowed to cover – that doesn’t mean they provide the amount of value, per se. And they certainly aren’t priced the same – there’s a massive gulf between the cheapest and most expensive Gold policies.
So, what does the best Gold health insurance in Australia look like? At healthslips.com.au, we’re one of the only health insurance comparison websites that compares every policy on the market without any commercial bias, so we’re uniquely placed to help you choose the best policy for you. Here’s what we found…
We compared the cost of Combined Gold tier Hospital and Extras policies for 2 adults and their children in NSW. The cheapest Hospital and Extras Gold tier policy cost $690.20 per month, with a $150 excess. The most expensive was $1,696.14 per month, with a $750 excess. That’s a whopping $1,005.94 difference per month, or $12,071.28 a year that your family could save by swapping from the most expensive to the cheapest Gold tier policy.
Does the more expensive policy have better benefits? Not necessarily. The more expensive policy had a higher excess ($750, compared to $150 on the cheaper policy), which means you’d have to contribute $600 more for healthcare services when claiming on the more expensive policy, and it also didn’t include travel or accommodation costs. The Extras Cover for the more expensive policy did not include Audiology yet the cheaper policy did. In addition, the cheaper policy did not include Ambulance Cover nor did it cover accidents, and its Extras Cover did not extend to the Health Management/Healthy Lifestyle category.
As this comparison shows, there can be a huge difference between premiums, and paying more does not necessarily mean you’re getting better value. Always check what’s covered in your policy, taking into account factors such as the excess and policy conditions.
