If you’ve found yourself googling ‘How much do dentures cost?’, you’ll know that dentures in Australia are not cheap. Fortunately, you can use health insurance for denture costs, although there are some conditions. Here’s what you need to know about claiming dentures on private health insurance.

The cost of dentures in Australia depends on your dentist, the process required, the material used and the type of dentures (full, partial, upper and lower arches, or both), and figures vary widely. As a rough guide, a full set of dentures can range from $2,000 to $8,000 while partial dentures start at $700 and range up to around $3,000. Implant-supported dentures are more expensive, starting at $4,000 and reaching as high as $30,000. The only way to get an exact cost for your dentures is to see a dentist and get a breakdown of all recommended treatments.
The cost of dentures for pensioners in Australia may be less if you’re eligible for free or subsidised dentures with a concession card, such as a Commonwealth Seniors Health Card, Pensioner Concession Card or Veteran Card. Ask your dentist for details, and the length of wait times (usually they’re very long). Dentures are not covered by Medicare.
Yes, if you have Extras Cover that includes Major Dental cover, you can claim some of your denture costs. Limits will apply – you won’t get back 100% of the cost. Your insurer might allow you to claim a set amount or a percentage per year. Major Dental is usually only included on mid-range or top-level Extras Cover policies, so if you only have an entry level policy, you probably won’t be covered for dentures. Check your policy details carefully.
Before you go ahead with dentures, it’s a good idea to contact your insurer and ask:
We used the healthslips.com.au calculator to find policies that included cover for dentures. As of December 2025, the cheapest Extras Cover policy with Major Dental for one adult in VIC was $17.20 per month, which covered $500 per year for all dental claims – General Dental, Endodontic and Major Dental (which means claims for everything from annual check-ups to dentures). By contrast, the most expensive was $191.15 a month, which covered $1,200 per year towards all Endodontic and Major Dental claims. Both policies had a 12-month waiting period, and these prices don’t include government incentives or penalties that might affect your premium.
To find the policy at the best price with the best amount of cover for your needs, head to the healthslips.com.au calculator. Unlike most comparison websites, it searches every policy in Australia without commercial bias. It’s free to use, and you can search anonymously, in mere minutes. You can look for a new Extras Cover policy or compare your current Extras policy with other similar policies to find the best policy for you.
