What’s the best health insurance for physio?

By Trudie McConnochie

Physiotherapy is one of the most common treatments Australians claim on private health insurance. In fact, during the April to June 2025 quarter, Aussie insurers paid $131.64 million in physiotherapy benefits. But there are lots of misconceptions about how much you can claim for physio, when your limits reset and how to find the best cover. Here, we help you find the best health insurance for physio in Australia.

The best health insurance for physio is the one that best meets your physiotherapy needs while giving you the best value for money. Physiotherapy is included in Extras Cover, but the amount you can claim back depends on the level of cover you choose. Remember: no policy will cover 100% of your physio costs – there’s a limit to the amount you can claim per appointment and an annual limit. For example, you might be able to claim up to $40 per appointment, up to a limit of $500 each year. Some policies have limits as a percentage of the appointment – say, 50% of your treatment costs per appointment – as well as an annual limit.

To work out the best health insurance for physiotherapy, estimate how many appointments you’re likely to need per year, and how much of that cost you’ll be able to claim back on the policy. If your annual premium is higher than the amount you’d be claiming back on physio and other Extras Cover treatments (like dentistry and optical) across a year, the policy may not be good value for you.

Tip:

Most annual limits for physiotherapy reset on 1 January each year, but some Extras Cover policies reset at the start of the financial year (1 July) or the anniversary of when you bought the policy. Check your policy conditions or ask your insurer when your Extras limits reset.

Using the healthslips.com.au Calculator, we looked for the cheapest health insurance for physiotherapy for one adult in Queensland. The cheapest was $16.15 per month, with an annual limit of $390 (a limit which applies across physio, exercise physiology and occupational therapy claims). By contrast, the most expensive policy cost $187.30 per month, with an annual limit of $900. Here’s how much you’d get back for physio on those 2 policies:

Policy Premium
per month
Money back for first appointment  Money back for next appointments  Annual limit
Cheapest $16.15 $27 $24 $390
Most expensive $187.30 $56 $45 $900

Keep in mind, there may be a waiting period before you can claim physio on a new policy. But if you’re switching to a policy at the same level of cover, you won’t have to serve waiting limits again.

There are literally thousands of health insurance policies in Australia that cover physiotherapy – 11,338 across Australia as at 1 August 2025. With the healthslips.com.au Calculator you can quickly and easily search them all, in minutes, to find the best policy for you. It’s free, unbiased and you don’t have to enter your contact details to get your results. Look for a new Extras Cover policy today, or compare your current policy to others. Make sure you compare what each policy includes to get the best physio cover for you.
