When does private health insurance reset?

Reviewed and updated 3 April 2024

What are private health insurance limits?

When you take out Extras Cover, the policy usually imposes annual limits for each type of treatment.

For example, you may have up to $300 per year for dental treatments or $400 per year for physiotherapy.

When do private health insurance limits reset?

These limits reset each year.

The date when your limits reset depends on your health insurer. The options are:

  • calendar year: 1 January
  • financial year: 1 July
  • 12 months from the date you took out cover.

Contact your insurer to find out when your Extras Cover resets.

What are lifetime limits?

Some insurers impose lifetime limits on certain services, such as Orthodontics or Laser Eye Surgery.

These limits do not reset.

When you reach a lifetime limit, you cannot claim for those services ever again even if you change your cover. Note, lifetime limits carry across insurers.
