Bupa paying millions in compensation for claims error

Bupa members who had Hospital Cover claims rejected between 1 May 2018 and 31 August 2023 may be entitled to compensation. 

The health insurer has announced it incorrectly rejected “mixed coverage” claims – claims for 2 or more treatments at a time – and certain other types of claims during this period. Bupa has apologised for the error, which has landed it a $35 million fine from the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC). 

Bupa has already paid out $14.3 million in compensation to members affected by the error. Any Bupa policyholders who have not been contacted and who believe their Hospital Cover claim was falsely rejected should visit Bupa’s claims webpage or call 13 41 35. 

“Bupa’s conduct … caused harm to consumers some of whom delayed, cancelled or went without treatment for which they were, at least partially, covered under their health insurance policies,” ACCC chair Gina Cass-Gottlieb told the ABC.
