Compare physio cover from every insurer

What your health insurance for physiotherapy includes, what it costs, and how to compare every policy.

What does physio cover include?

Physiotherapy sessions in a private practice are covered by Extras Cover. A portion of your physio treatment costs will be covered, with limits per session and per year.

For physiotherapy in hospital as a private patient, such as rehabilitation following a joint replacement, you will need Hospital Cover. After being discharged from hospital, you can claim ongoing physio on Extras Cover.

Do I need physio cover?

Many Australians choose to have Extras Cover to reduce the costs of physio for sports injuries, back pain, post-op recovery and routine maintenance.

Outpatient physiotherapy is not covered by Medicare unless you qualify for a Chronic Condition Management Plan from your GP, which will give you 5 Medicare-subsidised physio treatments a year.

The average waiting period for physio claims on new Extras Cover policies is 2 months.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get Medicare subsidised physio sessions?

If you are being treated for an injury or condition that’s considered chronic (expected to be ongoing), your GP may create a Chronic Condition Management Plan for you. Under this plan you will receive 5 physio sessions subsidised by Medicare per calendar year. Your physio will charge Medicare directly, and you will pay the remainder of the cost to your physio. You cannot use your Extras Cover to pay for sessions that are subsidised by Medicare.

What’s the difference between physiotherapy and exercise physiology?

Physiotherapy involves massage, manipulation, stretching and rehabilitation exercises, while an exercise physiologist creates and guides you through exercise programs and routines to help you manage medical conditions and injury rehabilitation.

What are combined limits?

Under some policies, different Extras Cover treatments are grouped under one annual limit, for example physiotherapy, occupational therapy and physiotherapy might have a combined limit. If you use all of those therapies, you’ll reach your annual limit faster. A policy with separate limits per treatment might work out better value for you.

What’s the difference between an initial physio consultation and a follow-up visit claim?

Most insurers pay a higher benefit for your first session than for subsequent routine treatments. Check your policy to find out how much your insurer will pay for each session type.

Do physio benefits reset every calendar year?

Most Extras Cover annual limits will reset on 1 January, but some reset on 1 July or on your policy anniversary date. Unused limits do not roll over to the following year.

Do I need a referral from a GP to claim physio on Extras Cover?

No, you do not need a GP referral to see a physiotherapist or claim physio sessions on Extras Cover. You can book directly with a physio and claim using your health insurance card. You will need to pay the remainder of the session cost out of pocket.
