As at August 2026, there were 29 registered private health insurers in Australia, including open insurers and restricted insurers. 

What are open insurers?

Anyone can take out a health insurance policy with an open insurer.

What are restricted insurers?

Only certain groups of people can take out a health insurance policy with a restricted insurer. In most cases, these insurers offer health insurance policies to particular professions or workplaces only.

Do registered health insurers sometimes sell health insurance under different brands?

Yes. A number of the 29 registered private health insurers sell health insurance policies under different brands. 

When you buy one of these policies, you are simply buying a policy from a registered insurer that sells policies under that brand.
