Is Couples health insurance cheaper than Singles?

By Trudie McConnochie

If you’re living with your partner, you might consider joining your health cover into one policy. But while a Couples policy might simplify your household expenses, it won’t save you any money. In fact, having separate Singles policies might work out cheaper. Here’s why….

No. One health insurance policy that covers 2 adults isn’t cheaper than the same policy for one adult doubled. But while a Couples policy won’t save you money, it does mean you’re only making one payment, which some households find more convenient.

What’s the best health insurance for Couples in Australia?

When it comes to cost, it can sometimes be cheaper for couples to get 2 separate health insurance policies, so they can choose different levels of cover – for example, when one person has higher health needs than their partner. And if you’re planning to start a family and want cover for private childbirth – which is generally only available on Gold tier policies (the most expensive level) – you don’t both need Pregnancy and Birth cover.

Essential to know

You don’t have to be married to have a Couples policy – you just need to be living in the same house.

Micah and Kara, considering Couples cover

Micah and Kara are a couple who have recently moved in together. While discussing their finances, they consider merging their separate Hospital and Extras Cover policies into one Couples policy. Kara has a high-level Extras Cover policy so she can claim for medications, but Micah only needs cover for dental and physio. They decide to keep their separate Singles policies to save money.
