Does health insurance cover vasectomy?

By Trudie McConnochie

If you’re looking for a permanent form of male contraception, vasectomy is one option to consider. A vasectomy is a surgical procedure which involves cutting the tube connecting the testes with the penis. Here’s how much a vasectomy costs, and whether you can use health insurance to cover the procedure.

The cost of a vasectomy depends on where you live, what your specialist charges, whether local or general anaesthetic is used, and what type of vasectomy you have (scalpel or no-scalpel).

If you have a vasectomy done in a public hospital, Medicare will cover all your costs, but there will be a waiting list. If you choose to go to a private hospital and use your Hospital Cover policy, you’ll be seen faster but you will pay an excess and a Gap. According to Medical Costs Finder, the average Gap for a vasectomy in 2023-24 was $500.

If you have the procedure done in a private clinic under local anaesthetic, you won’t be able to use your health insurance because Hospital Cover only covers procedures done in a hospital. However you will still qualify for a Medicare rebate. On average, your out-of-pocket costs for a procedure in a private clinic could be between $400 and $900.

How can I lower my Gap?

Vasectomy falls under the Male Reproductive System clinical category of Hospital Cover, which is included on policies Bronze and higher. It’s offered on some Basic Plus policies, too. It will only cover you for vasectomy in a private hospital, or as a private patient in a public hospital.

You’ll need to have your policy for at least 2 months (the standard waiting period) to make a claim. However, your insurer may require you to serve a 12-month waiting period for pre-existing conditions before you can claim, depending on your circumstances – check with your insurer.
