What are the registered insurers?

As at September 2023, there were 32 registered private health insurers in Australia, including open funds and restricted funds. 

What are open funds?

Anyone can take out a health insurance policy with an open fund.

What are restricted funds?

Only certain groups of people can take out a health insurance policy with a restricted fund. In most cases, these funds offer health insurance policies to particular professions or workplaces only.

Do registered health insurers sometimes sell health insurance under different brands?

Yes. A number of the 32 registered private health insurers sell health insurance policies under different brands. 

When you buy one of these policies, you are simply buying a policy from a registered insurer that sells policies under that brand.
